The Cross of Discipleship

by Fr. Kilian McCaffrey  |  08/31/2023  |  Pastor's Letter

We continue our journey through the heart of Matthew’s Gospel and move into a theme that’s very prominent in the teaching of Jesus: the cost of following Jesus Christ and the mystery of serving, suffering and The Cross. So, the Gospel this week is Matthew 16:21- 27. What does this lead up to? Well, the Last Judgment parable in Matthew, Chapter 25.

“For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man according to what he has done.”

As we mark Labor Day this year, yes, there is much work to be done.

On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4 we will proudly celebrate a 7:00am and a special 9:00am Mass. We will also host a special Potluck and Barbecue in the Parish Hall from 4:00 to 7:00pm. Bring a Traditional Dish from your home state or your country of origin and decorate a table with your favorite football team’s colors!

Start Your Cross Training:

I started back at the gym a couple of weeks ago. I realized that need a new pair of trainers. I told Fr. Matt Lowry that I was planning on going to REI to get some crosstrainers. And we both laughed. Let’s face it, as Catholics we are all in the business of Cross Training. Not cross-training, but Cross Training.

Do you see and understand the difference? There’s a hyphen that makes all the difference. To get involved, to work with the Lord Jesus, it just takes a small leap of faith to commit:

“Yes, it’s time for me to Live my Faith!”

I am convinced that the surest way to Heaven is to join the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We meet every Second and Fourth Thursday at 6:45pm in the Parish Life Center (or PLC).

Also on Thursdays, the Legion of Mary meets mornings at 10:00am in the PLC.

Our Knights of Columbus Council is now gearing up for a busy year.

You also have the chance to make or work a team for the Cursillo Retreats in November.

Contact our brand-new Youth Minister, Stephen Mikitish, to learn all about what’s new for our teens and young adults.

You can join our Choirs, That Man Is You, Echo, U of Faith, our Cub Scout Pack, the Blessed Sacrament Women’s Community who meet on the second Monday of each month at 6:00pm and, of course, our Preschool.

As we prepare for the busy Fall and Winter, we will also need Lectors, Ushers, Ministers of Hospitality, Sacristans, Extraordinary Ministers of the Body and Blood of Christ, and help with the Miraculous Medal Novena and Mass on Tuesday evening.

The Adoration Chapel, the new Spiritual Guidance and the new Intercessory and Healing Prayer Ministries are very exciting.

Fr. Kilian and all of our great Parish Staff
